Loch Monar 5 from Attadale to Glenuaig Shelter
Munros: Bidein a' Choire Sheasgaich, Lurg Mhòr, Maoile Lunndaidh, Sgùrr a' Chaorachain, Sgùrr Chòinnich
Date walked: 17/09/2016
Time taken: 12.5 hours
Distance: 29.7km
Ascent: 2784m
Day 1:
I started the walk from Attadale gardens at 6:20am but after some 2 km of walking I was picked up by two very nice Hydro workers (thanks for them) and was taken near Bendronaig Lodge. I am pretty sure I saved more than 2 hours by their help. I couldn't find the path up to Bidein a'Choire Sheasgaich so just turned left from the truck. Higher up the path was clearly visible, the top was reached just after 10am. The weather cleared up a bit on the ridge and reached Lurg Mhor in about an hour. From there I just headed North. The terrain is a very steep descent to begin with which became better soon. When I got down to the valley the sun came out of the clouds, it was a perfect time and place for a lunch. The climb up to Sgurr Choinnich is not very pleasant but with no time pressure apparently, is wasn't a killer. On the top of Sgurr a' Chaorachain I had to make the decision whether go ahead for Maoile Lunndaidh and then heading to Bearneas bothy or going directly to the bothy and tick Maoile Lunndaidh next day. Thankfully however I met a walker up there who told me there was an emergency shelter at Glenuaig Lodge, which I didn't know about. GREAT! Nothing remained but going up the 5th Munro and get down to the shelter. It was nearly as easy as write it down. The shelter itself is fantastic, it has a light and electric heating (!!!!!), both of them in a proper working order. The shelter is very small and cannot accommodate more than 4 people but this time I was alone.
The distance, time and ascent given applies only for this day and excludes the part I was in the car.
Day 2:
Woke up at 4am, full moon, no clouds, excellent weather for a nice walk back to the Achnashellach Forest car park where I left my bike 2 days before. This walk is 9.8 km with 211 m ascent. Excellent road conditions, all in all is a relaxing walk. Then I cycled back to Attadale (18.3 km with 148 m ascent). The 14% ascent on the road looked impossible to cycle over...
