Loch Venachar and Fairy Foxgloves from Callander
Route: Loch Venachar circuit, near Brig o'Turk
Date walked: 27/06/2015
Time taken: 6.5 hours
Distance: 18km
Ascent: 200m
North Side of Loch Venachar from Callander
Starting from Callander adds another 5 miles compared to the circuit from Brig o Turk, so didn't manage a circuit in available time, just straight line on north side.
Great scenery, of course, but highlight though (and reason for this brief post) was the Gartchonzie Bridge at the Callander end of the walk. As you cross the bridge you get this amazing aroma and if you lean over the side you see why - Fairy Foxgloves (had to do research to get the name) smothering the sides of the bridge. Although alpine natives to southern and central Europe they seem to love old Scottish Bridges. Legend has it that they grow where Roman Soldiers once walked. That's a better story than them just being garden centre escapees
