Winter Walk
Route: Caerlaverock Castle and Nature Reserve
Date walked: 08/12/2017
Time taken: 2 hours
Distance: 6km
We did this walk on a bright but bitterly cold December afternoon. The car park was easy to find and the paths not muddy at all, but a bit slippy. There is a bird watching hut about a 3/4 of a mile from the car park with lots of information about over-wintering species and a map of where they come from. Soon we reached the original castle, of which only the outline and moat is visible. A bit further via a boardwalk is the proper castle. However, on our visit the boardwalk was closed due to disrepair and we had to go round, adding a bit of distance. The castle is stunning and there is lots to explore with some interesting display information. We then went up the driveway towards the road, where we saw a sign with directions towards Ward Law ancient hill fort. The path for this is directly opposite the driveway to the castle across the main road. You go up a hill through a series of gates, and then right up a signposted path towards a hill with a covering of trees. There is information about the hill fort and a nearby roman fort at the top of the hill and a wonderful view of the surrounding hills. This adds about 2 miles onto the walk and we thought it was really worth it. After that we proceeded back down the hill and along the road to the car park. Overall, it was a lovely walk and I'd recommend it.
