Binscarth Woods, Finstown, Orkney
Route: Binscarth Wood, Finstown, Mainland
Date walked: 06/04/2016
Time taken: 0.5 hour
Distance: 4km
We started out across a wet field, despite good weather. The walks description said two shoes for bogginess so we were wearing walking shoes, and not boots. We managed to pick our way across the field and had high hopes of a lovely walk in this mature woodland - planted over a century ago. However the trail was so muddy that we got only a few hundred yards along it before it was so wet that we were forced to turn back.
We shall definitely try it again, but in wellingtons next time. The woodland and the views from the field across which it is accessed, are stunning, bay, wetland, hills rising beyond, right on the doorstep of the third biggest town in Orkney, midway between the two biggest: Kirkwall and Stromness. We took some photos of the view and the boggy ground to give an idea of its state. Admittedly the winter has been wet, but it was a shame the walk description caused us not to bother to take boots.
