A Fyne Day on Beinn Bhuidhe

Route: Beinn Bhuidhe, via Glen Fyne

Munros: Beinn Bhuidhe

Date walked: 04/03/2023

Time taken: 7.5 hours

Distance: 21.35km

Ascent: 1053m

After finally getting back to the hills in the last weekend of February it seemed the weather would hold and Saturday was to be another fine day. It took me a long time to decide on where to go but eventually plumped for Beinn Bhuidhe. The weather was to be best in the West and from reading the walk reports on this hill it seemed to be rare that there was good views available so I felt I should seize the opportunity whilst it was there!

I was very close to ignoring the alarm when it went off a 5 the next morning but thankfully I didn't! On the road for 6 and got to the car park just before 8. I got myself and the dogs sorted and started down the road. It was -4 when we started but the sky was clear and it looked like it was going to be a beautiful day. I had been dreading the walk in slightly but it was very pleasant in the early morning. We passed a herd of highland cows with no issues and the dogs were soon off the lead.

It took about 1.5 hours along the road and track before arriving at Inverchorachain, I took a 10 minute stop to fuel up and lose some layers. Starting off up the path was good going in general. Quite steep so we gained height quickly, the path runs right on the edge of the gorge and was quite sheltered. I knew there was a bad step coming up which I hadn't been looking forward to and we came across it after about half an hour or so of ascent. I found it quite straightforward but I am quite tall which probably helps. The dogs struggled a little but I gave them a boost and they were up and away!

The path continued upwards, crossing over a few burns with little water flowing. A steep section which then flattens out and the hydro track was reached. I had decided to take the hydro track down in the hope if would be a bit shorter and with a more consistent gradient than the path up.

From the track the going was good, the boggy section was quite dry thankfully, apart from one section where my boot went under! The rest of the mountain was rearing up infront of us now and looked quite intimidating, however when we got onto the path upwards it wasn't as bad as it first looked. Another half hour of climbing and we reached the ridge and were rewarded with fantastic views in all directions!

The ridge walk was superb with the clear views, and shortly we arrived at the top. A fantastic spot to have lunch! A good half hour soaking it in and we headed back down the path. The steep section was over quickly and we soon arrived back at the hydro track. I had hoped this would be a quick and smooth walk but it was pretty loose and steep in places so it was harder than I expected!

Eventually we arrived back on to the road an it was a nice walk to the Loch Fyne Brewery where I got a nice drink and the dogs got some doggy ice cream! A great day!
