Waiopehu/Twin Peaks Tararua Range New Zealand

Date walked: 03/12/2010

Time taken: 9 hours

On my first visit to hometown Levin, in 23 years and a must was to climb Waiopehu. Beautiful warm sunny day and borrowed my brother's car and drove about 15 mins to end of a farm road. Walked about 15 mins across paddocks and then into the bush. Immediately began climb uphill on a bush clad ridge though the steepness eased off after about half an hour and thereafter it was a long undulating journey of nearly 4 hours from the car to the new Waiopehu Hut. Took a break and lunch also a few photos then another half hour climb to the summit. All the jouney up to the Hut was within the Bush so only a few glimpses over the countryside. After the Hut the Trees and Vegetation smaller so then could have a view as making way to the summit 1097m. This area of the Tararuas I have fond memories from my young days when so often I hunted deer and pig back in the 1970s.
