Seana Bhraigh from Schoolhouse Bothy

Munros: Seana Bhràigh

Date walked: 21/04/2024

Time taken: 7.1 hours

Distance: 26.76km

Ascent: 992m

I wouldn't normally make public a report unless it would be of use to fellow walkers, one thing that is fairly obvious is that there are no recent reports for tackling Seana Bhraigh from the north (Oykel Bridge).
We have waited all winter to tackle Seana Bhraigh, with George unavailable due to a broken bone in his foot - I suggested to Parminder we head up to the far north west.
This would be my second time tackling SB, last time I walked in from Inverlael and although I thoroughly enjoyed it, this time we opted to approach from the north.
We both did plenty of research and a couple of reports made me question whether this was a good idea, as those walkers ascended via the pointy craggy NE ridge. It certainly does look very impressive from a distance and even close up, but being wimps we opted to utilise the ATV that would take us to the shoulder and then approach via the northern ridge.
Our plan was to leave Fife at 4am which with hindsight was a bit of overkill, but it did mean we had a great drive up the A9 to Inverness with literally no vehicle in our way.

Large car park next to the Schoolhouse Bothy

Image
Bothy in the background along with a bit of low level cloud

Image
Track is pretty god right through to the buildings at Corriemulzie Estate buildings

Image
Track is a bit undulating, far better on the return cycle

Image
Seana Bhraigh making an early appearance

Image
Nice to see some old fashioned trees

Image
Approaching Corriemulzie and the gate you have to go through

Image
The way ahead, plenty of puddles as the track is not used as much. The very pointy hill is the NE ridge approach - it does look very impressive

Image
Corriemulzie buildings

Image
The track follows the river

Image
The hills are getting nearer

Image
Slight incline - means dismounting

Image

Image
Plenty of little streams to cross

Image
A cairn to assist you at a junction

Image
Proper cyclists will just ride across the water, there are boulders and other rocks lingering to try and catch you out

Image
Looking back, the estate buildings are the other side of the trees in the distance. The ATV track is a bit of a short cut, we opted to stay on the main track

Image
Not too long before we abandon our bikes, hills not that far away now

Image
This was made us park our bikes, just to the right the burn narrows and crossing is very easy, we cycled for 8.5km

Image
Track was very flat after the burn but our decision had been made

Image
This is where the main track turns left, we headed right up the ATV track

Image
Good underfoot to start, but it is going to get mushy

Image
Looking impressive?

Image
Rocky track now grass

Image
Looking back after gaining a bit of height

Image
A nice lochan to the east of the NE ridge

Image
Seana Bhraigh summit area

Image
Looking back down the grassy ATV track

Image
We are now about 600m on a flatish stony plateau

Image
Parminder concentrating, he left his poles in his car and was having 'pole withdrawal symptoms'

Image
Not far now

Image
Looking across to the NE ridge approach

Image
Looking back down

Image
Looking across the corrie, Loch Luchd Choire

Image
The final push up to the summit

Image
Arty shot across the corrie

Image
NE ridge or if you want it's correct name Creag An Duine or An Sgurr

Image
Parminder about to get his camera out, cloud about to join us

Image
Looking NE from the summit

Image
A bit of snow lingering

Image
We spotted 3 bikes, a bit more up market than ours, we never saw anyone

Image

Image
A few photo's from inside the bothy, looks pretty fancy

This was terrific day, weather wise it was superb, especially as we had drizzle for most of the way north. This turned out to be our first Munro for 6 months and we both now have 9 left Parminder on his first round & me on my second. Having said that the chances of me compleating again are very remote - the 6 left on Skye would mean overnight stays and that is out of the question.
