A foray deeper into the Pentlands

Route: Scald Law and Carnethy Hill, Flotterstone

Sub 2000s: Scald Law

Date walked: 12/05/2015

Time taken: 3 hours

Distance: 13.2km

Ascent: 757m

I'd decided that it was high time that I went a bit further into the Pentlands to explore a little. I chose this particular walk as it seemed like a good entry point from Flotterstone and I wanted to get up to the highest point to get a feel for the area. Finding the start point was easy enough and it's good to know that there's a station here with more information.

The sun was out and the hills were looking braw. I thought it was a bit curious that for the entire walk I only saw one other person, but there you go.

Image

The ascent got a little steeper here and the skies a little greyer. My legs began to protest and I was reminded of how unfit I still am.

Image

The wind began to pick up considerably at this point, and these sheep had the right idea as I stopped for a break.

Image

The ascent levelled out a bit and I was rewarded with an excellent view in all directions. The higher I got, the worse the wind was getting and I had to deal with bits of my coat and bag that kept flicking up and hitting me in the face - safe to say it's not a problem I've ever had to deal with before. The chap in the photo looked similarly wind blasted as he passed, which probably explains the dearth of walkers.

Image

The view the other way was similarly impressive, with Scald Law up ahead and the Kips beyond.

Image

The climb up Scald Law itself looked relatively innocuous from here, but it was a fair climb up it at times, probably due to my own unfitness rather than anything else.

Image

However, once I reached the top and was able to take in the view it became instantly worth it.

Image

The descent was nice and gentle and I walked along the side of Loganlee with just the local sheep for company.

Image

I eventually came 'round to Glencorse which looked nice just as the sun was beginning to set. I was glad of the flat tarmac walking by this stage, and the thought of driving home was definitely not appealing. I couldn't even go into the Flotterstone Inn.

All in all a rewarding day, despite the wind at the top of Carnethy Hill.
