Deuchary Hill Short Loop

Route: Loch Ordie and Deuchary Hill, Dunkeld

Sub 2000s: Deuchary Hill

Date walked: 13/06/2019

Time taken: 4 hours

Distance: 16km

Due to weather forecast we opted for a shorter and lower hill day in the hope of beating the weather. We went for Deuchary hill as it offered so many options subject to the weather playing ball.

Followed the route as described on WH from the Cally car park to Mill Dam and followed the Upper Path to Loch Ordie. After turning right after crossing the Leddown Burn the path did get wet in a few places but given recent weather was in good condition. We followed this until crossing the burn again and the path to the summit was nice and obvious. This took us up through lots of blaeberry bushes and I think, some cloud berry. A few steep steps and great views kept us going on the way to the summit.

At the summit, we had beaten the weather and had great views all around if a little breezy. We opted then to lunch behind the fin of rock on the summit which has two lovely dry and flat stones to sit on while the fin of rock itself has a big quartz vein though it. This gave us lots of shelter from the wind to enjoy lunch and the views.

Rather than head back down the same way we opted to head North West following a faint but good path towards Lochan na Beinne and the track around it. A 400m stretch of the track has been dug up for what appears to be water supply, but after that, it is a great track which heads towards Loch Ordie. Instead of walking to Loch Ordie we went down to Dowally Burn, turned left and followed the burn through fantastic Perthshire countryside past Dowally Loch, Rotmell Loch and on to Mill Dam, passing a few fishermen and seeing lots of fresh Beaver felled trees.

At this point we had arrived back at Mill Dam and retraced our steps back to the car. All in all an enjoyable 10 mile loop and ideal for a slightly longer short day in the hill.
