Avoiding the fog on the Pentlands

Date walked: 18/12/2021

Time taken: 4.5 hours

Distance: 15.4km

Ascent: 853m

After an evening of peer led night navigation, we stayed in the camper at a very icy Threipmuir Reservoir car park. People were arriving from before light for their own Pentlands adventures, bikes, runners and walkers. Our initial plan was to drive round to Flotterstone to start but it was a long road round and we were just as quick starting from here.

After our evening course, John got hungry and we ended up eating our sandwiches etc which I had brought for today. So we had our porridge breakfast, and packed water and fruit, it wasnt going to be a long day afterall.

We left the van at 10am and headed up the track towards the hills. The sun hadn't reached this area yet and a thick frost lay on the land, with black ice on much of the road itself.

I had previously done a round of the Pentlands from Flotterstone, with Margaret and had a rough idea of a decent circuit. Up over the Kips, Scald Law, drop to the West end of Loganlee Reservoir and back along the track.

As we passed along the road, we were high enough to be above a very extensive inversion covering the Forth Valley and estuary and climbing up the stepped path to West Kip, it was absolutely glorious. Clear blue skies, whisps of low cloud in the glens to the South and West while to the North and East, whole swathes of low lying land and water remained under cover of the cloud.

Inversions beyond

Busy hills today, lots of runners about. This place must have been a real treasure to the locals during lockdown.

Our views ahead and round the Pentlands were amazing, just AMAZING.

Scald Law ahead

The ascent to Scald Law from the West is much shorter than the other direction and we were at the top in no time. Considering the time and our descent options, we decided to add on Carnethy Hill to the loop and descend instead to the East end of the reservoir and Logan House

Amazing views

Looking down towards the valley floor, it was very white. Soon realised that again, as the sun hadn't risen above the hills, the ground still had a thick frosty coating. Headed down the muddy path which crossed a broken fence and a burn a couple of times, we soon reached the road at Logan House.

Having a blast

Turned left and headed back along the road. Passed a fishing station, boats seemed to have been removed, out of season. Reaching a house called The Howe and the western end, we saw several upturned boats which frankly, i wouldnt want to be in, a wee bitty run down lol.

The path swings North and through a fairly tight glen before opening again into the Bavelaw Estate.

Back out of the field and on to the tracks down to Threipmuir.

4 and a half hours, the only stops were to admire the view and take a sip of water, even the fruit didn't come out the bag.
Straight home along the still cloud covered M8.

Whole central belt saw nothing but this today.

Can't believe we had such glorious conditions while the low land was completely shrouded in the grey murk all day.

Not sure if it was the non stop walk, but both of us felt a tad stiff after this one today.

Happy Christmas everyone.
