Ben Vorlich november 2012

Route: Ben Vorlich via Loch Sloy

Munros: Ben Vorlich (Loch Lomond)

Date walked: 25/11/2012

Time taken: 6.5 hours

Ascent: 945m

We set off from the carpark at Inveruglas about 9am in a mild shower, the walk up to the start of the climb ( 500m before the dam ) was uneventful, however we did pass the beginings of a building site with heavy constrution plant parked up, i dont know what this will mean for access during the week as there was'nt anyone around to ask

The start of the 'path' is noted by a small cairn about 30cm high next to an obvious path, beware that the path which basicly goes from there almost straight up to attain the ridge, it is very steep and boggy lower down so gaiters would be advisable. the path is not in a good state due to the run off from all the rain recently and is particularly treacherous on the way down.

Once we attained the ridge, there was thankfully snow underfoot instead of mud and the gradient eased somewhat for the most part. the walk up thru the crags was splendid as they were for the most part incased in ice and snow which made some great photo's , we walked past the trig point and headed for the summit, there is currently some ice around on the ridge in particular on the little crag where the summit cairn is located, i didnt feel the need to put my crampons on at any point but this cant be far away if the weather continues the way its going.

We retraced our way back down the mountain stopping only for a snadwich in a wee hollow by a crag or to take some photo's as by this time it was brightening up somewhat and the views were getting better as we decended.

Decending once past the ridge and on the steep part requires care and is very slippy on the steeper parts as there is a lot of run off from the mountain.

In all we had a cracking day and only seen 2 groups of people the whole day ( one of which was heading off for Ben Vane ) suprising for such an agreeable if not perfect day

looking Fwd to my next climbs just up the road ' an casteal'and ' beinn a chroin' in december :)
