Allt Sheicheachan and Beinn Dearg
Route: Beinn Dearg from near Blair Atholl
Munros: Beinn Dearg (Blair Atholl)
Date walked: 02/03/2019
Time taken: 4 hours
Distance: 29km
Ascent: 1143m
Quick(ish) solo sortie, mostly by bike. After a few typical initial minor navigational mishaps I found myself climbing out of the forest above the shooting range and up the Glen (I followed the anti-clockwise route the reverse of how the walk is described in here). The weather was quite fine and a slight tailwind helped with the trundle up the hill. At the ford at the top of the Allt Sheicheachan I decided to leave my bike and ascend to the top of Beinn Dearg on foot.
Made decent progress as the rain came on and the wind rose and by the time I'd reached the cairn which is hoped and initially thought was the summit, I was glad I'd brought my waterproof breeks as well as jacket. It was cold, with a string wind by now and horizontal sleet. Having checked the map and realised there was a bit further to go, I scurried across to the main summit, wondering a little about the wisdom of being up there alone in deteriorating conditions. Didn't linger on top, beat a hasty retreat and it didn't take long before I'd dropped back down off the summit plateau, the snow turned back to rain, the wind dropped and it was altogether less wild, though still pretty dreich.
Back on the bike to rattle down the track beside the Allt Sheicheachan, popped into the bothy to say hello to 2 chaps settling in for the evening, then toiled slightly into the wind back down towards Blair Atholl, less so as the gradient increased further down and some good freewheeling was to be enjoyed. Enjoyed the last section through the atmospheric Banavie woods but was glad to get back to the car and some dry clothes.
