Haven't posted a walk report for a long time, but walked a nice historic route today. Keeping within the current 'lockdown' rules, this is a local walk for me in Fetteresso Forest in Aberdeenshire, starting from near Auchenblae.

The Cryne Corse is an ancient crossing from Deeside into Aberdeenshire and was once a drove road, an option to the nearby Slug Road which is now the A957.

With my two cocker spaniels in tow, we started off around 0930 from the forest lay-by above Upper Quithel. As expected, it started dry and with light winds.



Fetteresso is a massive forest with miles of groomed forest tracks. The Cryne Corse is on these tracks for the first couple of miles. I could make out the Durris Transmitter in the distance, which was where I was heading.



Soon, the Right of Way sign posts take you off the main forest tracks onto the old route. Sadly, quite overgrown and would be very boggy in wet weather. Felt a bit like a firebreak or a clearing for the power lines. Sad really, considering the history associated with this road.




Crossed another forest road where the road improved quite a bit. Rough but a lot clearer.



We then joined another forest road which led up to the 300m high Durris TV Transmitter.



Stopped for a cheese sandwich and admired the huge scale of this structure and its massive anchors. Took a zoomed shot at the rather vertigo inducing aerials on top!



This is where we turned round and retraced our steps back to the car, around 4 miles back. A really nice walk with quite long ascents and descents. One surprise though was the midges. Not that common here, but they were biting bad!
