Cullen to Portknockie circuit - bonnie with much variety
Route: Cullen Bay and Portknockie circuit
Date walked: 09/07/2016
Time taken: 1.5 hours
Distance: 7.5km
The sides are high near the town with lots of shrubs, plenty of wee birds. Arriving in Portknockie we went diagonally across the road to the right but don't turn down any streets to the right, keep going in the diagonal direction and eventually we came across Church street to the left and headed down there, got to the end and we firstly landed at a dead end before turning right and heading along the street until the houses stop and the view opens up above the old harbour which is very picturesque. The town is also very picturesque and characterful. We kept going around the top, stopped to take in the view beside the town's fisherman's memorial and then carried on along the top along to the start of the cliff path. You can go down to the harbour and then carry onto the shore. The shore here looks very dramatic with caves and various rock protrusions. We will be back to explore. Carrying along the cliff top we came to the fiddler's bow rock which is a very impressive large rock arch away from the cliffs, I didn't know it existed so was impressed to see it.
The place was full of seabirds. The walk around the rest of the cliff top has stunning views as you are heading back to Cullen.
There comes a point where the path either carries on along the top or turns down to the shore to Jenny's well which is where we headed, this was a good decision as we came down to a large hole through the rock known as the Whale's Mouth and then a lovely path along the shore that takes you past a large cave and then onto the long sandy beach back to Cullen.
We didn't walk the part around Cullen town since we've been there a few times but meant we didn't have the ice cream, not often we go to Cullen and don't have ice cream!
