Wonderfall Foel Fras.
Date walked: 14/04/2011
Time taken: 9 hours
Distance: 16km
Away for a romantic four day break in North Wales, we decided to try this route, hoping to escape the crowds we heard had congregated on the Snowdon tops the day before.
The weather was outstanding and after our stomachs being full of a very hearty full English, we left the comfort of our B and B and headed up the A55. Once parked and ready for our walk and after 5 minutes more scrutinising of the map, we realised we needed to get back in the car and drive further up the road. We were so pleased, it was quite a way further up by car to the car park for Aber falls.
Most people parking here were doing the simple 'flat' walk at the bottom of the falls. Not for us though.
Following a round robin route we sourced from Trail we deviated from the main path and headed across the scree.
After that, we simply followed the waterfall.....beautiful. And the best bit? No people!!
The pull upto the top of Foel Fras was hard and (for us) pathless, and the hot tea and bun once on top was warmly welcomed!!
It had swallowed up quite a bit of the day getting here, but the hard slog was behind us and the next part of the walk we found quite easy.
Now following the path and the circuit, we continued past the scrawny Welsh ponies and enjoyed the walk to Garnedd Uchaf in the sunshine. Odd formations of slate protuded from the Earth, like something from Superman!
Passing Bera Bach and Drosgl, we headed round to the end of the walk with tired toes.
With views to the sea on one side - to Snowdon on the other, this is a walk of two halfs. The first is dominated by the wonder of the hills own waterways. The other that has odd slate features with the familiar brown ruggedness found in many hills, with views beyond of mounatin and sea.
The end of the walk we lost our way a bit and had to just walk (well.....crab walk downwards!) towards the path we could see at the very bottom. Jumping the river we found another part of the falls and finished the walk with sore feet and sun scorched faces.
A hot bath and well earnt curry was the order of the evening. Overall, a great walk, particularly if you like crowd free walks and waterfalls. How Wonderfall!!
