Haystacks - Walk in the Sunshine and a Navigation Course

Date walked: 15/04/2021

Time taken: 5 hours

Distance: 9km

Ascent: 597m

We set off from the car park behind Honister Slate Mine with our navigator (we were combining Haystacks with our navigation course). The course was designed to help us interpret maps and use compasses so that it we can climb mountains comfortably and feel more confident.

The day was beautiful and as we climbed and spent time doing tasks on navigations with our friendly guide Matt (from Lakeland Mountain Guides). It was great fun and the amazing views of Pillar, Scafell and Buttermere made it all worthwhile. We spent a long time navigating off the path so could have walked up the mountain much more quickly; I would highly recommend Wainwright's favourite mountain.

We ate lunch at the top and looked out on the brilliant view of Pillar before heading back down to the car park via the path.

It was a great day out and I would thoroughly recommend both Haystacks itself and Lakeland Mountain Guides (especially there informal and informative navigation course). I will be back here soon!
