Sub 2000s: Benbeoch

Date walked: 29/08/2020

Time taken: 2.5 hours

Distance: 10km

Ascent: 226m

Woke up, seen it was a good day and decided to go for a wee dauner and tick off one of the local Sub 2000's. Had a wee look at Google earth for a different route to previous walk reports and set off with Fraoch in tow for the New Cumnock-Dalmellington Road (B741). I parked across from the entrance of the large New Cumnock Substation at the Forestry Commission gate without causing obstruction and headed on my way along the track. After about 1/2 mile the track comes to a T junction where I turned left towards Benbeoch. The road here soon comes to an end as you enter into the Pennyvennie Opencast. There is a path off to the left here that takes you on to one of the opencast tracks. Follow the main track towards Benbeoch with the large Quarry over to the right.

After 1/2 mile or so this takes you to the 'main' road though the open cast. Turn right onto this road and head up hill. I took the track off to the left at NS492091 but later found that its far better to stay on this road and take the track to the left at NS495090. At the end of the track I climbed the fence and headed up onto the ridge. Once on the ridge I followed a set of quad tracks for the last couple of hundred yards to the summit cairn. A couple of hundred yards on is the top of the cliff face thats seen from the B741 so headed here for a couple of photos obviously taking care where I stood

A wee pose at the Summit Cairn

Dalmellington nearly looks alright from here ;)

The views here were amazing for such a small hill. With over 70 miles of visibility today I could see down towards the Galloway hills, the Antrim coast, Mull of Kintyre, Arrochar Alps, Ben Lomond, Ben More and beyond and even my hometown of Sunny Stevenston

After a wee break I set off back along the quad tracks and followed them down to the road where I turned right and went along to the junction turning right again back down the hill and along the route I came back to the car. Great wee walk! :D
