Yr Wyddfa via the Llanberis path

Hewitts: Snowdon - Yr Wyddfa

Date walked: 23/05/2024

Time taken: 5 hours

Distance: 15.8km

Ascent: 956m

Our first Hewitt! Not the most exciting of routes, having not done any higher hills since 2022 I wasn't sure of taking the miners/pyg route to the summit of Yr Wyddfa so opted for the longer but less challenging Llanberis route. I now strongly suspect we wouldn't have a problem had we gone for one of the other routes but better to be cautious I guess

We set off at 6am to avoid the crowds, could probably have had an extra couple of hours in bed and set off a bit later as at no point was the walk busy compared to the likes of the more popular Munros we've been up despite being the best day of the week so far for walking. I think the main thing would be to get to the summit before the trains start to arrive as the trains did look to be busy! We met our first people just before the halfway house and they were on the way down.

Coinneach sets a sharp pace, this is where I made the error with him when first trying to turn him into a hilldog. He isn't the typed to stroll along, stop for photos etc when he is out he is on a mission! Though there was a lot of sniffing at a rock that they both found particularly interesting and don't ask what caught his interest in a dried up stream

The wide path led up and up...steepened a bit where we passed two mountain bikers carrying their bikes up then under the railway and continuing up alongside a wall. Looking down a corrie lake was like a mirror, perfectly still. We reached the point where the various paths converged. This actually seemed to confuse Coinneach who seemed to think he was the one in change of the route finding and he wasn't keen on taking the path to the summit  It is just a short walk to the summit from here, which we had to ourselves. I tried to figure out how to get us all in a summit photo, fortunately a runner came up and took the photo for us.

The views were nice, aside from that hideous building just below the summit that was made even worse by the metal fencing surrounding it. A couple with dogs arrived and so we left the summit and we had a drink and snack just below before heading down the same way.
