Barony Hill - great views and solitude but poor signage

Route: Barony Hill, Dailly

Date walked: 08/08/2020

Time taken: 3 hours

Distance: 11km

Attempted to do the circuit shown on the website, and on the board beside the church in Dailly vlllage. Went for the anti-clockwise route which was reasonably well signposted to start with but this soon petered out. Luckily as I had binoculars I was able to pick up distant gates and way markers so found my way to the trig point no bother though some bits of the track between the first two farms were very boggy and waterlogged despite it being a sunny day - don't try this one in white trainers! It is a long shallow climb and the views are behind you, every time you turn around they just get better (Weather permitting of course). From the trig point it is easy to see the route continuing down the slope at approximately 90 degrees to the left of your approach. It is easy to miss the post that tells you to take a left uphill shortly after you enter woodland on the return leg and the path there is so narrow and poorly maintained you do ask yourself if this can be right. However it opens out again after about 150m of uphill walking and continues fairly easily to the point on the map labelled as Glourie. At this point which was badly flooded and very muddy the waymarker indicates straight ahead but straight ahead is a fence and the path beyond it is very indistinct to the extent that I eventually got lost and exited the woodland to the left before making my way back to Dailly across fields and then minor roads. The map suggests that you need to keep the Falfarrocher Burn on your left, but I could not see a path that would allow this.
