Route: Mount Keen by Glen Tanar

Munros: Mount Keen

Date walked: 27/10/2020

Time taken: 7.5 hours

Distance: 29km

Ascent: 1530m

So today we decided we would walk from Ballater, yup that’s right , Ballater to Mount Keen. Set off from home about 615 heading up and over my favourite road !! Got to Ballater, church square car park , and headed for the bridge . Followed the road for a short distance before heading along the track beside Queen Victoria’s cairn . Along the track and then you sp for mount keen which goes through a gate and along a steep, long track gaining height as we went. We met some hunters who asked where we were heading before they set off again. Another sp pointing the way to our destination brings us dropping downhill into a bogging section which we cross gaining height again . Over the top and mount keen pops into view and the path up looks long and steep! We continued along hillside heading for the bridge. We then start the hour long slog to the top which includes at least 500 steps expertly laid into final ascent. Was very windy and cold at top but we got there after 3 hours of walking . Too cold to hang about for long so after a quick munch we head down again. This time we are practically jogging down the steps !! But this was where the jubilation ends as the prospect of our ascent and descent fills us with dread!! But we made easy work of it and arrived back at car 2 hours or so after leaving summit where a well earned brew was waiting for us. Glad we went a different route than standard made it more interesting plus we saw loads of deer
