Turned off the main road at New Abbey and passed the Mill pond along a very narrow road for a mile or so.Parked in the little car park next to the river. Followed the signs past the cottage and through the forest until eventually you get to the fire break track with the fence on your left.This section even in August was very boggy and hard work with long grass hiding deep holes .Having been up it in the spring it is difficult to stay dry and upright although poles do help .After an age you leave the forest and start ascent of the first peak.
There are a number of isolated fir trees to mark progress over this steep section until the summit of Knockendoch is achieved.The views north and east are excellent .The tidal Nith and Solway providing a fascinating backdrop.
A short drop and across the Col takes you up onto Criffel itself again the connecting route can be poor other than in dry weather.
The view from the top is well worth the bog misery.To the west the Mull of Galloway is clearly visible and the Isle of Man as well as the Cumbrian mountains .
We decided to return on the same route rather than go down the Ardwall side which has similar bog traps on the open section.
At the wooden gate above the forest we came across a large family of tiny lizards and numerous frogs .The whole walk was just under 8 miles and although difficult in places was well worth it for the exceptional views
