Mayar and Dreish in the snow

Route: Mayar and Driesh, Glen Clova

Munros: Driesh, Mayar

Date walked: 29/01/2017

Time taken: 5 hours

Distance: 14.5km

Ascent: 835m

The first part of the walk was very icy underfoot so this part took longer than we would have liked. The steep climb up was brilliant but hard work in knee deep snow. The path was visible for about half the way up but eventually the snow became too deep to see the path so we had to use our map to find the way. Once we reached the top of Mayar we realised that we had turned left too early on the way to the summit (just a little detour).

There were amazing views from the top. Despite there being deep snow underfoot there wasn't a cloud in the sky and we were surprised to see a number of other walkers at the top. The best part of the hike was watching the white mountain hares racing around on the plateau. From the top of Mayar the path to Dreiser could be easily seen even in the deep snow. The walk to the summit of Drieish is reached quickly. There was little visibility at the top of Dreish so we didn't stop for long. The decent back down was also easily seen in the snow because this is a well used path. However, it was hard ice so our decent was very slow. The walk back to the car park through the Forrest was lovely but also very icy.

Overall a great climb in the best snow conditions.
