A day of first's

Route: Ben Chonzie via Glen Lednock

Munros: Ben Chonzie

Date walked: 19/03/2017

Time taken: 3.5 hours

Distance: 12.5km

Ascent: 712m

It's turns out its been a while since I last did a report. In that time a lot has happened & a few more Munros have been bagged but I've neither had the time or urge to right a report on the walks I had done. So after realising yesterdays walk marked the first of many things I thought it was only fitting I right about our walk up Ben Chonzie.

The walked marked my first Munro of the year & for weeks i'd been itching to get out on the hills. So after my sons football game finished at 11am yesterday we nipped home to change, pick up the dog & off we went, destination Ben Chonzie which would be my sons first Munro. Down to a number of reasons my son has never made it or fancied tagging along on previous trips to bag Munros but having scaled 4000ft+ mountains with ease in Austria a few years ago on holiday I thought it was long over due that he joined me.

We arrived at the car park just after 12.30 to find the place full. Finally finding a space we suited & booted up & set off just before 1pm. As we passed the cottages signs clearly stated dogs to be on leads due to lambing season which meant Cassie's first Munro in 18 months would be on the lead 75% of the time. As previous reports state Ben Chonzie is fairly straight forward which it is & after a quick lunch half way up we reached the cairn marking the route to take across the hillside to reach the fence posts in just over 70 minutes. By now the wind was at its strongest but it had little or no effect on either my son or the dog who both upped the pace & set off ahead of me to find the fence posts. We decided to skip the corner & cut straight across to the summit of Ben Chonzie.

We arrived  & then about turned as the wind was fierce & a incoming rain/hail storm was heading our way :( so we decided to get off the summit rather than hang about which was a shame as apart from the wind the skies had been blue all afternoon & views from the top looked great. As we made our way back towards the main track we were hit by the incoming hail storm which my son seemed to enjoy though I cant see why being pelted with tiny balls of ice at 50mph in the face brought such enjoyment to him, I can only guess it must have been me he was laughing at as I tried to keep my balance whilst going downhill & trying to deflect the hail stones away from my face

As we re joined the path the skies cleared & the blue skies returned for the rest of the journey back to the car. We got back to the car just before half four which for my sons first Munro was great going for his first Munro especially after his football in the morning
