First walk report on here :D . Decided to do this as a 3 but with not many walk reports then I've decided to share for the benefit of others. Parked car at Crainlarich and hopped on train at 07.48 with my daughter Corri (14) and sprocker Cairn (16mnths). Enjoyed the 70minute train ride to Corrour identifying all our Munro's we've did to date ☺️ landed at Corrour for 09.00 and after a few trainspotting like snaps we set off on the manicured track. Decided on anti clockwise route so after hostel we took the higher track that gradually rises along the side of Meall Na Lice. We then quickly off loaded jackets as temperature was rising. Perfect conditions tho with slight breeze and sun starting to appear. The track then comes to a junction where you now go pathless....straight up to the left of the shoulder of Meall Na Leitire Duibhe. This climb is about a mile of grassy heathery ground and sets the tone of what's to come later in the day 😰 the views back to the Loch however start to open up and you can see across to Beinn Na Lap and the final summit of the round. Once up to the shoulder you take the natural line veering right and you now see Carn Dearg in it's full glory. You also start to see the path winding its way up to it's shoulder and onto the summit. With the hard bit done it's not long before you're approaching the impressive first cairn of the day.
Making good time and looking across towards Sgor Gaibhre you're reassured to see long grassy slopes with a faint path going straight to its summit. No more pathless climbs....how wrong I was! 😳 Off we set with Cairn discovering some grouse to his yelping delight πŸ•. Pleasant walk between this pair of hills and views in all directions are stunning. Loch Ericht comes into view over on your right and Corri takes delight in identifying the Drumochter hills that we've bagged in previous outings. Final climb brings you to an uninspiring cairn after the first peak but it's Corris 70th so it's a small milestone πŸ‘ The views across to Ben Alder are impressive from here.
It's taken us 3hours to get here so we start to relax in knowing that the 9hour guide the Stevie Fallon route (albeit slightly different and in opposite direction) gave us will be greatly shortened. All looking good to catch the 18.26 train ☺️ As you come off the top you see the steep east facing sides to this mountain. Care has to be taken as the path is eroded and loose in places but before you know it we're down to the Bealach separating the 'top' Sgor Choinnich. I'd decided to skirt around the top and neighbouring Meall Nathrach Mor so it was a simple case of a NW line following the contours over more pathless grassy, heathery ground on a gradual uphill route. Once around the side of Meall Nathrach Mor you look down to see the end of Loch Ossian and Corrour Lodge. Our line was to go for the right hand edge of the forest and so it was a long descent picking our way through grassy tussocks and heather. Once down we came to a deer fence with no visible gate or stile to climb over πŸ€” I'd thought I'd read in a report a mention of a gate!? So it was a climb over for us both with Cairn getting manhandled unceremoniously over ☺️ slightly faded path from here down the side of the trees following an old fence line brings you to a track. Quick left over the bridge and then your right behind Corrour Lodge (how the rich can live). Following the track right brings you to the head of Loch Ossian and a pleasant 20minute walk by the banks lulls you into a false sense of security. Cairn gets a few dips in the loch as we go which is much needed as the temp is warm now and no breeze to cool us down. Crossing over a cattle grid and soon we take a right onto a small path by a burn which heads up through the trees. Some nice little waterfalls and deep pools as you walk up. Cairn gets cooled down yet again β˜ΊοΈπŸ• further up there's a small bridge crossing the burn but we went beyond that to clear the trees. Few minutes further on there's a natural stone crossing and once over you come out on to the open hillside. You can see here the full side of Beinn na Lap and with no path then the going in warm weather is tough on the quads. A natural shoulder on the hill takes you up to the left of the top and occasional large slabs of rock are a welcome relief from the grass and heather. We were all feeling the heat now so water stops were made frequently and thankfully for Cairn there was the odd pool now and again for him to take advantage of. The last bit of climb is rocky but as you come over that then the cairn comes into view πŸ‘πŸ”οΈ It also provided the welcoming breeze which we had been sheltered from on the East facing side. A 20 minute stop on the cairn let us finish off our water and food and it was then a pleasant descent overlooking the vast Rannoch moor. The station was forever in our sights and by 1610, some 6hrs and 54minutes later, we were sat outside the small station house. With great reviews on the grub then it was pre orders of venison burger with chips for me and fish n chips for Corri. I had a cold Corrour lager whilst waiting as food didn't get served til after 5. What a way to end a spectacular day. We sat outside the station and with the train being only 10 minutes delayed I had time to tell Corri the relevance of a film called Trainspotting and how she can watch it when older and recall this day. πŸ˜‚πŸ‘πŸ”οΈπŸ”οΈπŸ”οΈ Corri #69,70 & 71; Me #88, 89 & 90; Cairn #7, 8 & 9: Scotland isnae Shite!!
