Glorious walk
Route: Barnhill and the Corryvreckan Whirlpool
Date walked: 19/08/2018
Distance: 21km
It's a long, long way to the start of this walk but well worth getting to and then doing. The walk description here is clear and accurate, we found. We did not encounter a gate a Lealt, however.
There is no change in the nature of the road when it switches from being public to private but there is an obvious notice marking the demarkation between the two (and so the start of the walk). There is a good information board perched in the quarry car park, worth reading but easily missed. Do not be tempted to drive further. There is a locked chain across the track less than a mile on and trying to turn at that point would be difficult.
We did the walk over two days, starting late on day one having crossed from the mainland via Islay that morning. We camped at Kinuachdrachd Bay - a lovely spot. No otters there for us but two herons dazzled us with an an aerobatic display. Were they chasing one another or just playing? Whichever, we hadn't realised that herons could be so agile in the air - they'd always seemed to be lazy fliers.
Next day it was just over an hour to the magnificent view over Corryvreckan. It is a mesmerising spectacle. We were especially blessed to witness a sea eagle gyring over the swirling waters.
We were lucky to see Corryvreckan in sunshine and the sun brought colour to what can be a bleak landscape on our return. The views down to the sea and across to Kintyre were glorious.
We encountered nobody else during our walk and overnight stay. Yes, it is remote but Corryvreckan is so special we were surprised to have it entirely to ourselves in the middle of August. Make the effort - you won't be disappointed.
