Note: My walking colleague and I are not cyclists, but we took bikes to take advantage of the return downhill terrain and gradient. This short description and route can be undertaken by any fit hillwalker confident in a mountain bike cycling over good lbulldozed hill tracks used by vehicles.

STAGE 1
Parking: Parking at end of public road passing by Corriegarth Lodge, plenty of space to park at NH 5141 1694.

STAGE 2
Cycling/walking up hill: we planned to cycle much of the 11.5km to summit from parking. Alas, we cycled first 4km and my colleague’s bike chain broke! Confident in our downhill plan, we walked and pushed bikes for next 7km to summit. Truth is, we would have had to walk and push bikes uphill for most of uphill in any case because gradient just on that line between quicker walking than cycling uphill.

A lot of bulldozed tracks to provide access for servicing wind turbines, so we used OS Maps App to make sure we were on right track. In poor visibility, navigation would be essential as potential to follow wrong track significant.

On reaching a radio mast building on summit, we abandoned bikes for 300m walk across peaty bog plateau to the small summit cairn at NH 6002 1449

Reached summit in 1hr 55mins.

STAGE 3:
Returning to bikes we freewheeled most of 11.5km back to start in 35 minutes.
