Oronsay Island - what a treat with the tide on your side

Route: Oronsay island, Ullinish

Date walked: 13/12/2023

Time taken: 1.5 hours

Distance: 5.5km

Ascent: 100m

What a treat this little stroll is. While Skye does come with amazing views and lovely strolls to take in the beauty, the walk description for this walk is absolutely right - this is one of the coastal walks with the best views.

Oh - and if you are reading this looking for a short walk on a day with not so ideal weather - no need to rush out there. You won't see all the beauty around. Do save it for a good day.

There are only 3-4 parking spots at the end of a very curvy single track road with hardly any passing spots. It does get busy here during high season, so do be prepared not to find a spot or having to manoeuvre your car back and forth around sharp blind bends.

Once you have managed the traffic situation you are in for your reward. Do take your boots as the first section down to the beach is very boggy in places, definitely after a few days of rain. Once the views open up towards the Cuillins and the cliffs from the surrounding peninsulas you won't regret having come down here. You can actually see almost the complete Cuillin range, red and black. The high cliffs all around are amazing to see.

The walk over to the island is only possible curing low tide, so a well-timed visit is a must here. If you are lucky to get a tide during sunset or sunrise, you are doubly lucky I would assume. The short walk over to the island is easy enough to do and the stroll around the island and up to the top is a must. The few sheep are used to the visitors. The sharp cliffs all around the backside of the island are a bit of a surprise, but not that surprising considering that all coasts around you look at are high cliffs. The island has quite a good gradient, but you can choose a gentle way up to the top.

If you take a picnic and are lucky not having to share the island with too many others this is a truly enjoyable outing.
