Meall Buidhe - A Quick and Quiet Graham with Stunning Views.

Fionas: Meall Buidhe

Date walked: 24/04/2021

Time taken: 2.5 hours

I had a busy week so not fit for an early start, but wanted to tick off something. It was an overcast morning so after lunch I decided to head West, where sunshine was promised! After consulting my book of Grahams I chose 'Meall Buidhe' in Glen Ogle (Not to be mistaken for the Munro of the same name in Glen Lyon!)

I pulled into the suggested layby to find it was very busy (There is a burger van there) so I turned and parked in a small layby 100m along the road, walking back along the cycle path. The forestry track is obvious and heads straight up through a gate in the deer fence heading for a communications mast.

Zig-zags make for a quick acent and you are soon out of the trees.

Views begin to open up towards Glen Dochart

Soon Ben More appears in view along with more distant summits. The view was hazy but stunning none the less. I reached the end of the track in about 30mins.

At the communications mast Meall Buidhe is the high ground to the SE. I later found this is a false summit of course!

Going is rough over the short heather and some peat hags. Although I found a pretty dry route. Though I think it would be much harder going in poor conditions or visibility. Soon the communications mast disappears and the view expands.

The high ground seen from the mast opens up to a sort of plateau with views now towards the Lawers Range, Tarmachan Ridge and Me all Ghaordaidh in Glen Lochay (all summits I have climbed in the past year).

I made it to the top in just over an hour. There are two cairns, I believe the smaller is the true summit. Stunning views towards Ben Vorlich and Stuc a Chroin.

At the second larger cairn you can see the end of Loch Earn peaking out as well as the road through Lochearnhead

Looking the opposite way the Lawers Range dominates the view. The route marked in the book suggests to head NW to a second summit for more views down to Loch Tay.

I decided I had seen plenty so headed back the same way. Keeping to the higher ground I was soon back on the track. I returned to the car with a total walk time of 2hrs 25mins. A perfect little hill for a Saturday afternoon. I saw no one else on the route, I'm sure that couldn't have been said for many of the nearby Munros!!

After several years reading walk reports I thought I would make my own, hope it is useful/interesting!
