Cnoc Croit na maoile

Route: Cnoc Croit na Maoile (Ord Hill), Muir of Ord

Date walked: 26/01/2014

Time taken: 1 hour

Distance: 4km

Well.. there are "road works" around the area to improve the forestry track, and felling going on.
Parking is a bit sparse, and we took a couple of wrong turns before arriving at the starting point. It was rather a dull day, but we were fortunate and caught some glimpses of sunshine.
The forestry track is fairly dull, but easy going. It is what it is, a forestry track for vehicles carrying timber. It is uphill all the way, and because of recent wet weather fairly muddy, and remnants of ice from the previous night's frost. Wooden sign marks out the turning for the track that leads to the summit. It was extraordinarily muddy, full of puddles at the start ( we chose another track on the way back). This part was all the same very pleasant, and the views behind us, Beauly firth, the tide out, and with the Kessock Bridge and Inverness partly shrouded in mist in the distance. Then all of a sudden we were clear of the woodlands and up on a heather moor, looking towards Loch nam Bonnach and the Affrics to the south west before turning right to get up to the summit marker. What a view! The Urrays, Cat's Back and Knockfarrel, the Black Isle and the Cromarty and Beauly firths all at our feet! Glimpses of Ben Wyvis shrouded in low clouds. We could also see the next weather system moving towards us from the west so we decided on turning around and head back to the car, the same way that we came up.
