Flagstones and insectivores
Route: Forsinain Trail, Strath Halladale
Date walked: 31/07/2020
Distance: 6.5km
We picked a great day for this walk, sunny and a moderate breeze, when there were no midges!
At stage 2 of the route we missed the second gate leading up onto the hill at the cottages. We continued along the track and enjoyed some views of Morven for a little way before realizing our mistake. When we back tracked we spotted the gate hidden behind a parked farm vehicle.
The route is wet as expected and a few of the flagstones were submerged in water. I must remember to take my walking pole, it would have helped me find the submerged stones and avoid a wet foot! The abundance of insectivorous sundews and butterworts and other fabulous bog loving plants was a delight and just as good as those at the RSPB reserve at Forsinard but with less people.
The forestry track was lined with a huge abundance of foxgloves, there has been a bumper crop this year.
At the end of the walk we chose to take the path along the river just before reaching the road as suggested. The bracken was very tall, shoulder height to me in places, and the path very indistinct. We saw almost nothing of the river and it would have been easier to walk along the road. I discovered later that I also picked up a couple of tics in this long vegetation so would choose the road next time.
