Inverbroom gorge and river

Route: Waterfall, gorge & river circuit, Inverbroom

Date walked: 08/04/2023

Time taken: 3.5 hours

Distance: 9.5km

Ascent: 470m

I’ve never shared any reports on here, but thought I would with this one, just to encourage folk to do it! It’s a brilliant short half day and ideal first of the year for old legs like mine!
Good parking at the first (south) Lael forest car park and across the bridge with good views south to Sgurr Mor

Followed the track through the farm, left then up the grass path on the right after a short distance. It’s an easy path with nice views over the strath

The path is very clear and well made. It meanders up and down across a few bridges until eventually starting to make its way up the Allt a Ghatbainn

but quite short, and a few handy staircases to help out.

The gorge is quite impressive but we sometimes had the impression we were being watched!

Soon you get to the last bridge in the gorge.

Looking down it’s quite a long way.

. It’s a very short detour to the waterfall at the top, but after quite a dry spell it wasn’t as impressive as it could be!

From here it’s a last wee climb out of the gorge and down the open hillside, with beautiful views ahead to Loch Broom and across to Beinn Enaiglair, with the Deargs peeping out behind.

The path remains very clear, but goes on for a fair distance before cutting back down a grass track to the floor of the glen. It’s worth noting that the track brings you out a bit further east than the WH description and you’re actually at the cattle grid. This means that you cross the field to the river almost immediately. If you miss that (we did!), you can easily cross down a bit later at Garvan cottage. It’s then a lovely walk back along the river, with handy flights of steps and bridges to make it easy.

We arrived at a bench cut from a tree trunk and headed right to rejoin the main track, because one of the bridges was down. It looks as though a replacement is underway though.
This is a GREAT walk and I’d recommend it to anyone. The maintenance is fantastic and obviously well funded. It’s amazing how many places in the highlands have benefitted from EU funding over the years. I wonder if that will be replaced?
