Beinn Bhan walk

Route: Beinn Bhan, Glen Loy

Corbetts: Beinn Bhan (Great Glen)

Date walked: 28/11/2010

Time taken: 4 hours

Distance: 8.5km

Ascent: 700m

We tried this walk today - two of us - me returning to hill walking after a lay off due to illness and a friend with a chesty cough. We found it much tougher than expected - the strong wind didn't help. Most of the walk seemed to be trackless and the ground rough (we may have missed the feint path under a light dusting of snow and maybe didn't stick close enough to the burn). I can't see the ground being much easier in summer as it may well be boggy with a lot of bracken cover. It was pretty steep going - my fault for not examining the map enough before we left!

The views are fantastic - at the first cairn we turned back as we were being blown over. I could see that, once you are up, the rest of the walk would be great as you would then be able to enjoy the views on an undulating wide ridge having done the hard work.

We took 4 hours to the first cairn and back but weren't the fittest party, had snow and ice underfoot and a strong wind. Don't underestimate this walk 'just' because the summits are less than 800 metres. Rough ground and steep terrain make the first part demanding but the views are worth it.
