10th highest, 10th (and 11th) Munro bagged

Route: Ben Lawers and Beinn Ghlas

Munros: Beinn Ghlas, Ben Lawers

Date walked: 09/07/2022

Time taken: 7 hours

Distance: 9.52km

Ascent: 942m

Arriving at the sizeable car park at 8am on a beautiful summers morning, I was surprised to see many fellow hikers already setting off the trail path. I met up with my mum, whose last 2 attempts of Ben Lawers both ended in disappointment, the last of which was 35yrs ago!

The path up was brilliant, huge credit to those who built it. It was easy to walk on and so easy to follow, this certainly makes it one of the more accessible Munro’s.

The day started cloudy and bright with a gentle breeze, and as we got higher the sun burst out to reveal the most spectacular 360 degree view. It’s no over exaggeration to say that views stretched from Ben Nevis to Merrick in the Galloway hills.

After 3hrs of gentle climbing and soaking up the sunshine and views, we finally made it to the already packed summit. The reason for the crowd was a quadratholon taking place, and we wished all those competing the best of luck whilst we nobly ate our lunches.

For our descent we had many options but as Ben Lawers had a dusting of cloud once we’d reached the summit of Beinn Ghlas on the ascent, we decided to return the same way and we’re not disappointed. The understated summit of Beinn Ghlas gives off an incredible view of the surrounding landscape and after stopping for a homemade brownie made our way back to the car park to complete a fantastic hillwalk.
