Peaceful Pentland Walk
Route: Monks Rigg and Braid Law, Nine Mile Burn
Date walked: 17/03/2021
Time taken: 2 hours
Distance: 7.79km
Ascent: 284m
Today was meant to be a gardening day but woke up buoyed on by Nicola's announcement yesterday that travel restrictions should be lifted by 26th April and thought if I am serious about climbing some mountains this summer, I should start by climbing some hills. Decided on this walk, and after an early lunch set off on what was a joyous drive through Midlothian- if I have learned one thing in the last year its where I live doesn't get the credit it deserves for its scenery. Drove into the car park at 9 mile burn , boots on and within minutes was far away from the road and it was just me the sheep and a lively pod cast about Bletchley. So the climb up was relatively straight forward, you know your climbing , but nothing too strenuous, hills all around and nice views of the Reservoir. At the top got a bit carried away partly because the Walk Higland description tells you to look for a sign post but its actually a way marker. Went 500m in wrong direction but was rewarded with gorgeous views of the Forth Bridges . Incidentally can't be many places you can see the Borders, Midlothian , Edinburgh and Fife in a 360 twirl. Finally gave in and dare I say it looked at the map, and got back on track . Which was a pretty , unevental if marshy in places return to base . Hard to believe that scarcely 30 mins away from city, I only encountered one fell runner and one lady enjoying the views near the end of the walk . It was the perfect March day as well, such a gem of a walk 🥰
