Sunny and scenic Meall Buidhe with Garbh Mheall
Route: Meall Buidhe
Munros: Meall Buidhe (Glen Lyon)
Date walked: 04/03/2023
Time taken: 3.5 hours
Distance: 10km
Ascent: 660m
Our walk followed the featured Walkhighlands route, but we also included the Corbett Top of Garbh Mheall, just a short walk to the North of the Meall Buidhe summit.
We were treated with lovely blue sky and relatively windless conditions, making the ascent straightforward, even if at times the path seemed to intermittedly vanish and reappear through (fortunately mostly frozen) boggy terrain.
Once on the ridge, we enjoyed spectacular and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains for miles around with only a few small clouds dispersed among the higher summits. The largely flat ridge made the final approach to the Meall Buidhe as leisurely as it was scenic.
Having reached the summit of Meall Buidhe, to the North was the summit of Garbh Mheall which lay invitingly with little distance and only a short drop between the two. The curiousity and satisfaction of another peak, especially one at the end of a ridge, encouraged us over and we reached the small cairn at the top shortly after. It only adds an extra 100 odd metres of ascent onto the walk (including the reascent Meall Buidhe on the return) and rewards the extra short effort with a fine sight ot the Eastern side of the ridge, and a better purchase of the view over Rannoch Moor.
