First Outing - Lochnagar

Munros: Lochnagar

Date walked: 29/06/2019

I guess first thing's first is an introduction...

For long enough I have intended on spending some time in the hills, biting the bullet and committing to it has taken some time but now it's safe to say I'm hooked. Having now completed a few wild solo camps I thought I'd make an attempt at documenting my trips from the beginning.

I was scrolling online when an add popped up for Blacks, 2 hours of browsing later my basket was full and my wallet a little lighter. Now the equipment had been purchased my next step was planning my first outing. This would be the first time I came across walkhighlands, an outstanding amount of information with great descriptions and routes.

Once the equipment had arrived it was a quick pitch of the tent to confirm all was present and functioning well.

A couple weeks had now gone by and the upcoming weather looked perfect for my first venture. Lochnagar was first on the hitlist with an overnight stop by Loch Muick. One of my friends agreed to tag along, this being ideal timing for a catch up prior to his couple months internship in India.

Friday afternoon and work done for the week :D . Car was already packed, quick pit stop for the tag along and we were off. Beautiful weather for the drive, arrival and hike along the Loch.

On arrival the tent was quickly pitched, certainly can't complain about the location.

Once the tent was up our first beer was cracked open and the water on to boil. I've used de-hydrated food previously in back-country BC but this was my friend's first experience, he won the coin toss and had his choice of chicken curry, chilli for me.

After food we went for a wander, beautiful surroundings... Glas Allt Shiel was empty that night with only one other couple pitched near by. Chewin the fat done we decided to get some sleep and planned for an earlyish rise the following morning.

As planned we were up bright and early. Our plan was to leave the tent pitched and pack up on our return. With our things together we started to ascend, as predicted the weather again was in our favour... some would say it was a tad too hot.

We continued on until we were at the top. Neither of us were prepared for what we were met with at the top, walking near to the ridge with the sheer drop to Lochnagar below. Proof of what we have on our doorstep if we make the effort to go and see. I think that's when I knew this is something I will undoubtedly be pursuing. To top it all of we were even met with what looked to be a young grazing Stag.

After spending some time looking around, a bite to eat and a celebratory beer it was time to head back down. Tent was soon packed away and we made for the car. On the hike out we both spoke about the enjoyment had and other potential trips in the future.

This is my first time posting on any sort of forum so feedback, questions or general chat will be appreciated :D
