Glen Lyon round
Route: Càrn Gorm, Meall Garbh, Càrn Mairg & Creag Mhòr
Munros: Càrn Gorm, Càrn Mairg, Creag Mhòr (Meall na Aighean), Meall Garbh (Càrn Mairg)
Date walked: 01/07/2018
Time taken: 3 hours
Distance: 12.3km
Ascent: 1295m
Early start today to avoid the 24c heat forecast for later in the day.
Marked trail very quickly gives way to deforested area (tricky underfoot) before joining the forestry road. Cross the rickety metal bridge and the path begins. Alternating steep and flat sections round the wooded area before the ascent to Carn Gorm properly starts. Numerous false summits with good view of An Sgorr before finally reaching top.
Small descent of about 500 ft to bealach then back up again to 2nd Munro following the line of the old fence along a rocky path to reach the decorated summit of Meall Garbh.
Head East off the top following the faint minor fence line along more rocky path following th broad ridge around to Meall a bharr- not a Munro in itself but paused at the cairn for a rest. From here small descent to another bealach before climb to Carn Mairg- highest point of the day and marked out by massive tor.
Very difficult descent off here to the East across a steep boulder field before a broad flat run in a crescent shape before climbing once more to bealach below Creag Mhor. Quick climb up to the left takes in the top before retracing steps and on towards west top.
Not sure what happened here (well I do, I missed the path by going WSW too soon) but made a right mess of the descent, tramping over rough ground, heather clumps and stream holes. Came upon a land rover track which descended West but ended up in fields clambering over fences to get back to main road about a mile East of Invervar. Last mile on the road was hot, still & sticky but just had enough water with me to get back.
Fine views of all surrounding hills from the top of Carn Gorm. Lovely gentle breeze once exposed after the 2nd top with view to Schiehallion. Excellent view of Glen Lyon on the descent from Creag Mhor
