A little hill with surprising views
Route: Craiglich, near Tarland
Sub 2000s: Craiglich
Date walked: 27/01/2024
Time taken: 1.5 hours
Distance: 4km
I've had my eye on this little gem for a while, but I certainly didn't expect what I received at the summit.
Arriving to the start point, I had the 'car park' (essentially a large layby) all to myself. I wasn't anticipating the hill to be empty, but from start to finish, I saw noone else.. a perfect walk for some peace and quiet
Beginning might be a bit confusing for some, as there were a couple of options, and weirdly, the locked gate on the left-hand side is the correct option. Continuing up the left side of the field, shadowing the fence.
The tracks kept me right for the most part, but stumbling across a giant boggy area, did make me question it a little. However, noticing a gate at the other side of the field, with some tracks beyond it filled me with confidence to keep going.
After this, it really is a case of carrying on with the tracks (despite them being very narrow and overgrown in parts). This carries on for around 2km, and then a sharp left up a steep section, with a straight shoot for the summit
Along the path, I took in views of various other peaks, including Bannachie, Morven, Lochnagar and Mount Keen (I think).
Upon finishing the short steep climb towards the summit, the trees disappeared and was greeted with 360 degree views to some amazing mountains and towns surrounding.
This is not a difficult climb at all. Probably one of the easiest, but definitely worth it to have those views. The path was a great deal better than my last hike up Kerloch too, so I literally have nothing to complain about with this one.
