Heaval
Route: Heaval, from Castlebay
Sub 2000s: Sheabhal (Barra)
Date walked: 15/04/2022
Time taken: 3.5 hours
Distance: 2.56km
Ascent: 326m
We decided to take the slightly easier option of ascending this from the car park behind the quarry. We deviated on the ascent from the WH gpx, following what initially appeared to be more clearly trodden path. This took us round the West flank of the hill before cutting up to the summit. There's not really a right or wrong way up this hill, but it did bypass the statue.
On the gusty summit we were rewarded with dramatic views over to Eriskay through the cloud and occasional glimpses of the bigger hills on the Uists. To the south the Bishop Isles and Vatersay were clearly visible.
With the kids chilling quickly in the wind, we didn't linger on the summit and descended closer to the more direct WH route, stopping at the statue for a sandwich out of the wind. The descent was steep, but quick requiring a little care in places.
Like a lot of wee hills this has better views and enjoyment factor than you might expect for it's height. Recommended to save for clear (ish) day.
