Stob Binnein and Ben More left for another day!

Date walked: 26/06/2010

Time taken: 6 hours

After following a few good routes suggested by him, picked one recommended by Ralph Storer (quote) ‘by far the best route’ up the south eastern ridge (Leacann Riabhach, Stob Creagach, Meal na Dige) to Stob Binnein, over and up Ben More and then descent via the North eastern ridge of Ben More. Estimated time, 8 hours!

After a bit of back and forth along the A85 to find the exact Parking spot, set off 10.30am, across the bridge on the A85 to find the path east of the stream. Found it and as described path did head into forest.

But met with a padlocked gate covered in barbed wire took that to mean ‘not this way you don’t’.

Decided not waste any more time, instead to go back and head up the landrover track and take our chances that we’d find path up through the trees from it.

About 20 mins up the track, at bridge, spotted pink ribbon on tree and headed into the woods. Path through and up not clear, but persevered and suddenly there was the boundary fence. The south east ridge, Stob Binnein and Ben More’s north east ridge all clear ahead. Crossed the river and headed up to gain the south east ridge toward Stob Binnein. Arduous going. Grass/heather underfoot and vicious cleggs made it less than enjoyable. Wide, very up and down and Stob Binnien never seemed to get any closer!

3 hours from the car and we were only about half way along the ridge. The realisation that, given this slow progres, this route may cost us a climb of either Munro started to dawn.

At 3.30pm (5 hours) only reached top of Meal na Dige. Knowing had to be back at the ranch washed, shiny n new for 8.30pm and looking at how much still had to be done before heading back, decided to descend into the corrie, return and leave these two grand Munros for another day.

Only stopped for 45 minutes max from start to return to car, 4.30pm (6 hours on the nose) Am definitely a plodder but have always been pretty much on route estimated times if not earlier up to this. Finding route for first part wasn’t straightforward, so slowed a bit but even given this, am struggling to see how this route up, over and down could be done in 8 as Ralph suggests?

Apart from the 6 hour leg stretch outside, not a great day on the hills. However, plan to return but will definitely stick to Benmore farm route or if can get a someone to pick me up a walk through from the South :D
