SC Odhair with Beinn Toaig descent
Munros: Stob a' Choire Odhair
Date walked: 15/05/2016
Time taken: 9 hours
Distance: 22.2km
Ascent: 1179m
This route was born out of contingency planning from an aborted Black Mount crossing. Stob a'coire Odhair is a gentle Munro with great views of the black mount and the descent off the shoulder of Beinn Toaig was a grassy dream on the joints, providing views of the Rannoch Moor.
We started from Bridge of Orchy, along the WHW to the forest lodge and turned West into the beautiful Glen Kinglass.
We climbed the long coire up to the Bealach Between Odhair and Stob Ghabhar. At this point we had to make a judgement call - We were 7 miles in and feeling it, after midday and hadn't completed the first major ascent of 3, then most importantly - the foreboding ridges of Stob Ghabhar were showing a reasonable amount of snow. The interior of the Black Mount is a serious place and so we opted for a more user friendly option (and a previously unconquered Munro) of Stob a'Coire Odhair.
We took a pathless route off the south ridge, gradually turning East onto Beinn Toaig and carefully choosing a route to avoid the buttresses and steepest sections down to the boggier lowlands.
We then rejoined the the WHW for 3 or 4 mile march round to Glen Coe in the evening sun.
