Muddy but recommended!

Route: North Third Reservoir, near Stirling

Date walked: 22/10/2020

Time taken: 1.5 hours

Distance: 4.75km

Afternoon family walk with kids (age 12 & 14) between showers. We spent 2 hours on the walk but that included stopping for a quick picnic. Was really enjoyable, gorgeous scenery and for a walk this length very varied with the shore, wooded climb and open hilltop from which the views are fantastic. It was also very muddy - previous reports have said the same but after weeks of wet weather, the path was a quagmire in places which does make the going slower. We struggled to find the correct start point but having parked up exactly where the Googlemaps link took us, there were a few paths to choose from so we just picked one and soon realised we were on the right route but in reverse. We didn't stick to the route exactly - we (carefully!) crossed the broken bridge instead of taking the detour and stayed on the shore until we reached the dam which meant stepping over a couple of small streams but nothing difficult. The road down to the starting point is single track with badly eroded edges and in places it's impossible to pull off to let another vehicle pass so be aware that you could end up reversing back to a passing place. Recommended.
