Aird Laimisiader
Route: Aird Laimisiadair circuit, Na Gearrannan
Date walked: 22/06/2015
Time taken: 9 hours
Distance: 20km
Day 7 June 22 Didn't wait around at An Gearrannan as there were a few walkers doing the route I did yesterday wished them bon voyage and headed to Aird Laimisiader lighthouse. No way markers but another easyish and pleasant walk notable for it once inhabited and farmed valley. Before the bridge at Carloway is a shop/gallery/cafe called the Blue Pig (lovely coffee). When I arrived I saw my first Lewis policeman who was checking a car in a ditch outside. The car occupant was in the blue pig waiting for recovery. Inside the shop/gallery/cafe were several local 6th formers learning about small businesses. The recovery van arrived, the tow rope snapped and off he had to go to get a new rope. Meanwhile a large coach full of German tourists arrived and couldn't get past, then a local bus, which had to reverse back along the road, and did so, straight into a car. You couldn't make it up, Chaos. Finished my coffee and made my way to the Dun Carloway Broch. Had a nice chat with the staff and an American at the visitors centre. Completed a survey (pointing out that the BT phones on the island don't work). I then headed South towards Callanish en route I found a pub the Doune Braes Hotel? A couple of wets and a phone call home to say I'm still alive and on to the hippies at Callanish (bearing in mind the longest day was the day before, thankfully) I found the Callanish Standing Stones very atmospheric, better than Stonehenge which I once could view from my bedroom window when I lived in Larkhill.
