Kilbo diversion 'path'

Route: Mayar and Driesh, Glen Clova

Munros: Mayar

Date walked: 08/09/2018

Time taken: 5.5 hours

Distance: 14.5km

Torrential downpours on the way up, but cleared for arrival and lunch at the top of Mayar. Crossed the baelach towards Dreish, but headed down the Kilbo path rather than up Dreish. So far, so good...until the path enters the forest.

The diversion is very well signposted, with luminous pink arrows on trees and neon ribbons tied to branches. But underfoot is thick, cloying, sticky, slimy, crumbly, pine-forest mud, the stuff that transforms walking boots into platforms. The path winds, dips down and up across stream channels, and is quite steep. It could be quite good fun, skiing/sledging downhill on the slick bits, but my walking companion, with knees which aren't as young and much more abused than mine, found it rather hard going.

So be aware that the diversion could be rather punishing. Poles will probably help a lot. And a boot-scraper!

A grouse is not a pheasant, and that is not a capercaillie.
