Ascent: 160m
Moncreiffe Hill from the North, from Tay Car Park with Kids (12, 15 y/o)
Hill no. 231 - Sub2000 no. 112
Stats:
Total distance - 5.5 km
Total time - 2h31m
Altitude gain - 143 m
It is an easy, pleasant walk with lots of things to interest kids. Several nature-inspired sculptures are hidden in the wood. We managed to find most of them.
After reading a few reports, I decided to do the ascent from the north, starting from Tay Car Park. I read in reports that there are too many dogs. Fortunately, there were only four cars in the car park and most people kept their dogs on a lead when they saw us. However, there was dog poo on the track in several places. Perhaps the ascent from the south, as recommended by the WH route, is quieter. I do not know. However, you would miss most of the interesting wooden sculptures.
The whole walk was on well-maintained paths and tracks. The following map shows the route we took.
Map of our route:
Elevation profile of our route:
We started our walk from the large Tay car park. Luckily, we arrived outside of peak times.
There are a lot of points of interest. We tried to find as much as possible.
The hill is also surrounded by lovely nature.
After about 50 min. from the car park we reached the top of Moncreiffe Hill.
We took a different route back to the information board. However, this path is very steep, so I would not recommend taking it when it is wet.
From there, we continued on to the trig pillar, where another fort used to be.
From the old fort, we continued along various paths back to the car, keeping an eye out for more wooden sculptures.
Some of the sculptures were easy to find, but others, such as Fox or Faces in the Trees, were more challenging.
Although we did not find all the sculptures, it was still a very pleasant walk around the Sub2000 Moncreiffe Hill.
