Great Glen Way in 6 days

Date walked: 10/07/2016

Time taken: 6 days

Distance: 117km

We walked this over 6 days from Fort William to Inverness. We used the new Cicerone 1:25000 route map booklet which was great as well as the Cicerone trail guide though our version wasn't updated for the high level routes. However there are a couple of areas noted below where the actual route differs from the map and 'official' route description.

Day 1 - Ft William to Gairlochy, staying in Spean Bridge over night - light rain during day, easy walking alongside canal

Day 2 - Gairlochy to Laggan Locks, mostly dry with occasional showers, generally easy walking along canal and forest tracks. Took small diversion to visit St Ciarans church at Achnacarry, great view through to Achnacarry House.

Day 3 - Laggan Locks to Fort Augustus, short day. Much of the early stage of this section has been improved to allow cyclists and is along the former railway. There are sections of the old military road you can also follow and makes for more interesting walking in our opinion.

Day 4 - Fort Augustus to Invermoriston taking the high level route. Steep climb in sections but well rewarded for the great views. mixed weather today, great sunny day to start but rain came through after lunch time.

Day 5 - Invermoriston to Drumnadrochit taking the high level route. Great weather today and no rain! Again the climb was rewarded with views over the loch and back to Ben Nevis. Note the route in the map booklet isn't quite as shown on page 27 after crossing the bridge over the Allt Sigh burn. Instead of following the fence as shown, the route follows the forest road for about 1km before cutting up through the forest to the deer fence. The GGW Rucksack Reader description is correct but the mapping scale isn't large enough to see it.

Day 6 - Drumnadrochit to Inverness - heavy rain started mid-morning for a couple of hours making heavy going but cleared up and lovely evening for arrival in Inverness. Stopped at the EcoCafe en route for a welcome coffee and Ovaltine in the rain. Note the route has changed after you cross the swing bridge on the A82 in to Inverness. Due to construction works, instead of going through the sports centre car park as the Cicerone book says, you carry along the road to the campsite turning right into Bught Drive, follow the road round past the campsite , then left along Bught Drive up to the footbridge.

Overall an enjoyable walk, not quite as challenging as the West Highland Way we did last year but had many of the things we enjoyed, a good selection of comfortable B&Bs at the end of the day, a great group of fellow walkers to talk to along the way from Germany, America, France and quite a few from Scotland and great baggage transfer service, your backpack is a welcome friend to meet up with at the end of the day.
