Scottish National Trail - Fort Augustus to Mandally

Route: Fort Augustus to Mandally

Date walked: 17/09/2017

Time taken: 7 hours

Distance: 18.75km

Ascent: 170m

The Scottish National Trail is a 536 mile/864 km-long long distance walking route running the length of Scotland from Kirk Yetholm to Cape Wrath.

In Summer 2017 I spent several weeks completing sections of the Scottish National Trail.
My original plan for 2017 was to backpack the whole of the trail but due to lack of funding I could only manage sections where wild camping was an option.

I ventured out on three separate occasions and completed the route over the course of 15 days, as follows:

Trip 1 (July) - Blair Atholl to Fort Augustus (6 days, 5 nights)
Trip 2 (Aug) - Milngavie to Pitlochry (6 days, 5 nights)
(skipped Pitlochry to Blair Atholl because I made a video last year)
Trip 3 (Sept) - Fort Augustus to Morvich (5 days, 5 nights)

I aim to complete the remaining sections, through the Scottish Borders and The North Highlands in Summer 2018.
Along the way I made a video diary/vblog for my Youtube channel - Head for the Hills.

Trip 3 - Fort Augustus to Morvich (5 days and 5 nights)

I got the bus to Fort Augustus to continue from where I left off in July.
(In the video I have made it look like there was no break inbetween).

I spent the night in the woods above Fort Augustus overlooking Loch Ness before following the Caledonian Canal and The Great Glen Way South-West to Laggan Locks the next day. From Laggan locks I continued to follow the Great Glen Way for a short distance to Loch Lochy where I'd be staying the night.

The following day I took the high route (public road) overlooking Laggan Locks, towards Invergarry/Mandally, and stopped at the store, "The Well of the Seven Heads" before pressing on to my next camping spot near Poulary and Glen Garry.
