The Fife Coastal Path
Route: Fife Coastal Path 4: East Wemyss to Lower Largo
Date walked: 07/04/2015
Time taken: 2.25 hours
Distance: 11.5km
Was slightly apprehensive having read the previous review, but this stretch of the path is not as bad as I feared. Certainly there is a long stretch through the built up areas of Buckhaven, Methil and Leven, but there is still quite a bit of interest. Buckhaven is a tidy wee place, and there is a real ethos of community pride in the village. Lots of interesting historical background at places along the main road, and for those interested in architecture, there has been a real effort with some of the new build houses to echo the traditional stepped-gable style of old Fife fishing villages. There are a few monstrosities as well, but only to be expected in areas where the local council has been a one party hegemony for ever.
After passing through Leven you get the choice of a beach walk or an alternative "high tide" diversion. I tried both, but the high tide diversion makes for much easier walking, although on a really nice sunny day the beach walk might be very appealing...
I drove to East Wemyss, parked the car, and got the bus back from Lower Largo - to get a direct bus you have to walk up to the main road and get either the X60 or X62 - if you catch a bus from Lower Largo as the directions state, you have to change in Leven. BTW, coffee in the Railway Inn in Lower Largo is a bargain!
