Brown Carrick Hill (the Easy Way)
Sub 2000s: Brown Carrick Hill
Date walked: 10/12/2020
Time taken: 2 hours
Here’s going with the first walk report 😊
I was on annual leave this week, the trip I had planned to Skye was postponed due to tighter Covid restrictions in my area So it gave me the opportunity to explore my local area.
My fitness has taken a hit with the first lockdown, my first venture to the hills after was a bit of a knock. Last year I was doing well and had a decent pace however all this had disappeared. After it taking me 2 hours more than the guides advised on An Caisteal and Beinn a Chroin I was disheartened and have done little hill walking since.
So in a bid to improve my fitness and wellbeing I have set my sights on smaller hills to build up to the bigger one, hopefully next year when restrictions are lower.
My usual go to Sub 2000 is Cairn Table however I am usually put off with the bog lower down.
So I looked to the sea, and a hill that I have driven past may times and can see from my parent’s house, however never ventured up.
Initially I had planned to drive up the single track road to the 'car park', which was a grass verge. Plenty of room for a few cars, however the grass looked soft and I was fearful that I would get stuck. Also looking at how close the towers were from this point I felt a bit cheated on a decent walk. So down I drove again, my start point being the layby on the main road just before the turn off.
Back I walked up the road. If you are looking for excitement, then this perhaps is not the route for you. It was really easy going and the only obstacle was my dog jumping over the cattle grid to save me opening the gate opposite.
The views really opened up over Ayr and neighbouring villages. No views to Arran though
Once at the towers I took the route to the left, over a small fence then through a gap in the other two. You go through two fields, making first for the blue pipe on the fence below where there is a stile.
From here there is a faint path to follow, over some wetter ground, then inclining.
At the crest of this small incline you can’t see the cairn just yet however carrying on across the field it comes into view (I did go to the top of one of the higher bits just to check my progress). You go over another fence and its straight to the summit cairn.
I retraced my steps on the decline and back to the car with no trouble at all.
