A superb riverside walk
Route: Rocks of Solitude river circuit, Edzell

The walk description on the walk Highlands website is accurate and informative, but I would suggest that the riverside path on the east [true left] bank of the North Esk downstream from Gannochy Bridge is best avoided by septuagenarians [like me] or older. We did the circuit from Edzell to the bridge the opposite way around, crossing the 'shakkin' bridge' before walking the left bank. The tree roots and rocks are no real problem, but there is a steep and potentially slippery ascent at one point where one must climb 15m or so up the bank to gain a thin path at the top. Hanging on to tree roots seems to be the best method of ascent. Otherwise the walk is a delight and easy underfoot. We were fortunate enough to see a salmon attempting to leap the falls, a kingfisher whizzing by and two red squirrels.
